Mike Roberts 1955 -2012

Yesterday was the funeral of a dear friend and colleague, Mike Roberts.
A warm hearted, funny and loyal man, taken ridiculously early. He had wavered from his more regular self over the last few years and was finding things difficult after having to stop working. Some lovely tributes were read at the church in Earls Barton and I will never forget him for the love and affection he found time to share my way.

I will take myself off to the vast expanse of sands at Stiffkey in the next few days where I will remember Mike at his natural best, in company of friends, joshing the kids along and genuinely chuffed at finding a Stewkey Blue.

There is a light that will never go out.

2nd December 2012

And so Happy Christmas

3 more points for the Canaries - made an easy win look difficult. I couldn't go as I am laid low with a sickness bug I have picked up - probably from poor old mum who has been sent back to Sheringham after about 15 days in hospital. She has been sick and is in a bad old way. Shouldn't have been allowed home really as she is at a very low ebb right now. The bug has been rife locally - but hopefully I'll be back on my feet in a day or so.

Most of our time since I last posted has been full on with to-ing and fro-ing from hospital and then making sure mum has some company now she is back in her home. We have managed a few social interactions here and there. Nan's 70th birthday brought a reunion with her brother and sister - great to see them all together again - and a meal out for Nan at the Wheatsheaf.
Also had a lovely trip along the coast to Brancaster, Burnham Market and then lunch at Brancaster Staithe with the girls and Jenny's b/f Rhys.

The football has continued to surprise us as Norwich extend their unbeaten run and Luton have made it to the 3rd round of the cup. The match against Wolves is a no-lose game.

My fall into a state of slumber has come at the end of a mini-marathon of a weekend. Friday was spent travelling to London to see Ben Howard in Brixton (excellent) - got home about 3am. DG's alarm woke us at 6:30am. Spent the day in Norwich with Graham - in the expectation of a pub-crawl - however, tiredness took over and by the time I got home I was really not feeling too good - resulting in early night, sickness and missing today's game.

Work is mega busy for me at the moment too so a couple of duvet days may be a good thing (though catching up may be a bit hectic).

19th November 2012 again

NORWICH 1 MAN UTD 0

19th November 2012

Though I'd jot some notes down on how mum is at the moment.
Since being taken poorly last weekend (on the 10th) she has been a guest of the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital. In truth she had shown signs of taking a bit of a slump in form for the a week or so before the Dr was called. The staff at Sheringham were particularly concerned that she had maybe suffered a stroke. She was breathless and unresponsive. The doctor called an ambulance straight away - though it took 3 hrs to arrive!
DG and I went to visit the next day and saw a quite content, though clearly weak mum. No hint of Saturday mornings ailments though the assessment unit put her on oxygen and sent her to Dunstan ward where she still is some 8 days later. I did visit again on Wednesday after mum had been sick during the night. Again she seemed ok when I was there - a bit sleepy, but still with-it. I kind of expected that she would be quickly back in Sheringham but the Hospital won't send her back while they think she needs assistance of oxygen to help her through the day.
Cousin Margret visited on Friday but it seems that mum was a bit confused, rude even. Seems she's not too sure why or where she is. They say she's on her regular medication but her behaviour is a bit erratic. Billy visited her yesterday and had a similar experience. I do hope she is ok. I was hoping to get along to visit tonight but...... It's always easier not to - we've been so busy with work and sorting the girls out and I was expecting to hear that she was on her way home. Today they said again that as there has been little change, she is likely to stay for a day or so more. I'll try and get to Norwich in the next few days and post again - hopefully with better news

28th October 2012 - Clocks go Back

Well I have decided to put my extra hour to good use/stupid use this morning. I was laying in bed feeling a bit down because the long winter nights have now begun and thinking what a summer it has been and remembered that I haven't posted an update for a while.
So as the rest of the house wisely sleeps through the bonus hour I have been up around the house re-setting clocks (why so many god damned clocks?) I am wide awake and getting creative. That and the fact that the local animal life aren't aware that it is really only just past 6am. The farm up the road has beef cattle in a barn being fattened for the plate and the poor buggers have been singing their heads off this morning. Our chimney has become a top spot for the owls to sit and twit-twoo as well. A lovely sound but not this early on a Sunday.
It also meant I got to listen to the excellent Non-League Football show on Radio5. Not much about Luton but great that the minnows of the Footy world get a chance for debate/review/report

So wh'appen since the start of term?
Norwich's season really started to kick off - been stop start because of the international games and only a few home games  for us to go to. A poor start under Hughton (Hootun as they say up here) but signs of recovery and better play - which culminated in a fantastic win over Arsenal. Everyone says how poor Arsenal were but Narge played them off the park. We went en-mass (en mass?) to Villa Park yesterday to see another great performance that should have been a win but for a sloppy goal and poor crossing into the box. This was Rosie's 1st away match (and the 1st for DG for years). A long drive for a game of football but that's part of the fun of living on the edge of the country - every where is a long way a way. Norwich's local derby is now West Ham!
We also took in the England U21's at Carrow Road. A lot less "lively" affair than the return match in Serbia a few days later.

Rosie and DG had a great day in Cambridge with Gdad and Valerie, Jim and Hayley. Rosie was very worried about Chris's attempts at punting and was relieved to reach dry land. A slap up lunch at Browns and a tour of John Lewis's made up for everything though. Their trip home was a nightmare though - cancelled trains, missed connections and a call out to me to collect them from Norwich to get them back. Would have been a 5 hour journey and it's only 80 miles away. Must get DG to drive more often. Being away from proper roads for so long has dented her confidence of busier places.

We've had a few visits from Billy and Lynn as they were hoping to get their own gaff locally. The plan was to get a bolt hole for weekends till they can be up here more permanently. After a few highs and lows and let downs - it now seems that it is out of the question for now. Though they will try and get up and around as often as possible, not least because it means they can visit poor old mum and poor old dad more regularly - which will take a bit of pressure off me. Mum is fairly stable though frail in her Sheringham home. She managed a visit to Bessingham for lunch last week which we all enjoyed though it is difficult to cater for her needs while away from the home. Now that winter is well on the way she struggles more as she can't get out in the garden and there are fewer visitors generally. The phone calls have started to ramp up and demands for visits get a bit difficult to handle.

Dad is coming to the end of a 2nd year of very intensive treatment for cancer. We won't know how successful the treatment has been for a few months and he is rather poorly just now due to the culmination of everything the poor old bugger has been through these last few months. Everything piles on top of everything else and at the moment he is struggling to wander about home. An intense zap of radiography last week is expected to help him back on his feet soon - but he has to get over the zapping effect 1st. Having been with him many times when we've seen the specialist at the Norfolk and Norwich hospital, I am confident that he will be fine (in time).

Talking ailments - I had an MRI scan on my back on Friday. I hope to get a diagnoses once and for all and then start treatment for a more stable condition. I really want to be able to get back running - but if it means biking and swimming, I can live with that. The MRI scan has now ranked No 3 in the most horrible thing I have ever had to endure. No1 was a lumber puncture and 2 was having wisdom teeth out. Being in such a confined space for the best part of an hour nearly freaked me out. If I ever get asked to go for another one, I think I will say I'm doing my hair instead.

Other high points of the last few weeks? Rosie had a great birthday - including a mas sleepover and a roller-disco. Yup roller-disco's have arrived in Norfolk, 50 years after they went out of fashion in the real world. Jenny was a star pupil again at the awards night at Sheringham High School. She is the Queen of English. We've been planning for Jen's 6th form years (starting next September). looks more likely that she will be moving schools to a college in North Walsham (Nazza Wazza as the youf say). DG and me have thrown our selves into our work. Her school work seems never ending. I am now surveying everything from Wisbech to Horsey and Cromer to Norwich, an area equating to about 4 surveyors workload. Could absolutely work 24/7 and only scratch the surface. On the plus side, I am in the throws of choosing a new car for the next 4 years. I've decided that I need fat tyres and a high driving position so I can see over the hedges.

Well that was a cathartic hour (never written that word before). Apologies to my readers for going on a bit. That will teach me for leaving big gaps between posts.
Here's to a jolly winter. I'm off out with Rosie later this morning with no greater intention than catching leaves.

Sunday 2 September 2012

Oh it's a long while from July to September...

So what's been going on????
My memory of events since going to ROTW has become a bit hazy
So I'm going to hopefully try and remember a few of the more exciting things (coz my life is one long roller-coaster of fun right?)

The school term ended fairly quietly for every one - had a lovely visit from Kate and Ed O'Hanlon from the old village. Jenny's birthday party wasn't quite so quiet but I'm sure she enjoyed having the garden full of noise and her friends.
We went to Sawtry to see Sophie G on her 18th birthday. 18? Where did those years go? It was a great afternoon catching up with Gillespie's and Jones's and Rogers's.
The bike ride came next - see the photo's here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RwUbm2P6Guk&feature=g-upl  and here http://www.flickr.com/photos/16311022@N07/sets/72157630455324006/

A very demanding 120 miles from Shillington to Bessingham with 9 other biker boys. We can all feel very pleased with ourselves for completing it (again). That turned into a top weekend including having the longest laziest lunch ever in Billy's holiday garden in Langham. Lunch lasted till the funny music started outside the pub at about 10pm.

At the end of July we started our Olympic Experience.

Archery at Lords and a visit to the Olympic Park itself. Never to be forgotten. I think the whole event was brilliant. Felt proud to be British and all that. After a busy week with Grandad C (boating and chillies) I took Rosie back to London for more Olympics - this time at Wembley to watch France v Japan in the ladies semi final.

Most of  the rest of August (after Jenny's actual birthday) was spent in Lanzarote - soaking up the sun at last. We went all inclusive and eat and drank as much as possible in a bid to get our monies worth. Rosie loved all the clubs and Europop - I enjoyed the beach. DG and JP enjoyed an excuse to read and laze about without having to worry about anything back home. The holiday photo's are here http://www.flickr.com/photos/16311022@N07/sets/72157631349710416/ay
We celebrated Grahams birthday when we got home.  A feast prepared by the old boy and Sue in Langham
As Septemeber started - we had more excitement. I was a guest of the England cricket team at The Oval to watch them beat SA. A bit tenuous but Richard managed to blagg a couple of hospitality tickets. And then back to Bessingham for the unveiling of our new village sign, a visit from Radio Norfolk's treasure Quest programme and a trip to Holkham Hall for the food festival.

Here's hoping for a spot of quiet living again for a few months till Christmas rears it's head.

Some early pics from today's visit to ROTW in Hitchin.
I'm just opening up my little corner of the world in Google+ so bear with.......

8th July

8th July and it's raining. AGAIN!!!!!!!!!

To see the latest photographic content - go to Flickr

I'm going to have to get slicker at blog posts. Writing once a month leaves me posting a "round robin" type letter that you get at christmas telling you that young Timothy got a 1st at Oxbridge, which was nice (etc).
Blog early and blog often. We'll see

So here's this month's round robin/rant
It has been raining lots. Not every day and not all the time, but often enough to not bother planning to do anything out-doors - though I have splashed out on a fancy new gas bbq, just in case.

Among he obvious high points from the last month have been seeing the Olympic Torch breeze through Norfolk. As I write I'm watching an old geezer carry the torch in Huntingdon en route to Letch/Nidge and Luton. DG and I were treated to supper at Morston Hall last week - an amazing eatery serving food you usually can only dream of.
Watching Rosie sing in the school talent show on Friday was a heart stopping moment. She was great. I sneaked out after her performance but apparently some of the other children were very good too.
We've also been to The Royal Norfolk show - an excellent day out, a beer festival in Haisborough - well worth the visit, seen the occasional sunset down at our beach hut and managed the odd swim in the sea!

Granny came over for Sunday lunch the other day. She is going through her usual highs and lows. As long as she is sensible about what she eats, she should avoid getting the occasional awful chest infections. She is always desperate to be out side and always desperate for visitors - no change there then. I do feel under pressure to visit her though DG Graham and Billy all tell me to only go when it suits. Saying that, I plan to go this morning as the Potty Festival is on in Sheringham (Morris dancing (not me - never confused)) and then pick Rosie up from Brownie camp.

I have been having a lot of trouble with my stupid back. A 3rd professional has now told me to stop running around so I think I can retire from competitive sport that requires training shoes!

9 June 2012

Feels like I have been neglecting the Blogg recently so here's a brief recount of the comings and goings of the Bessinghamites since the last post.

1st up - mother. Poor old girl (I feel like I have to say that a lot) had another spell in the N&N with a list of  ailments. Happily back in Shezza now though she needs careful management at the moment. Fortunately the home has now got some really good staff and seem to be more concerned with care rather than profit these days.

Jenny has just got back from Barcelona (up the coast a bit) playing netball for one of the local rival High Schools. She is tanned and tired and had a great time. Jen has been full on with exams and revision recently so it was a very useful break.

Rosie is on her way to London today to see Matilda with her Nan. She has been really good lately, having to fit in around the rest of us. This half-term holiday was hijacked by the Jubilee - so there has been loads of things going on locally.

DG helped organise Bessingham's jubilee picnic on Monday - an excellent day getting to know folk in  the village. She has now started report writing - spent all day Thursday and Friday tapping away - right up till about 2am the other night (just in time to pick Jenny up from Wells/Spain)

I've been fighting a bad back - Dr says my running around days are over - I'll try and prove him wrong but it means no cricket this year. Got to get out on the bike soon in readiness for July 26th and 120 miles. Trouble is the bloomin weather is still not playing fair. Today it is blowing a gale and rainy and I was hoping to get a few hours in.

We have had a great Crab and Lobster festival in Cromer/Sheringham, a vintage car rally with about 250 cars, a wonderful day at the test match in Nottingham (was that summer?), jubilee parties in East Beckham and here and a lovely day on the Broads with Graham, Debbie and Jess.

Hopefully there will be some pictures uploaded here soon when I can get Picassa to work, otherwise go and look at my Flickr page http://www.flickr.com/photos/16311022@N07/

May 16

Still rubbish weather. What's going on???

A brief update on how mum is getting on...
Deb and I had a very productive meeting with the manager of the home yesterday. Lots of things highlighted that either need doing or are in hand. Everything seems to take time and money but, with mum in reasonable spirits at the moment, hopefully we can make her a little more comfy too. Hopefully she'll get some physio soon and a thorough eye test.

We have a French visitor at the moment. Neige (yes - snow!) has come over from the southern coast bit of Brittany on  a school exchange. Her English is about as good as Jenny's French - I'll say no more.

Decided not to get tickets for Wembley on Sunday. I know I'll regret that more and more as we get closer to kick-off but in truth it would be a very expensive day out. Having just renewed season tickets at Carrow Road, justifying another big outlay for another game was getting tricky.

I have been asked to play cricket all over the place this season - 2 teams at Aldborough are after me, Aston have suggested a game as has Graham. I also have an offer to play for Holkham - in front of the hall no less. However, I may have to leave my kit bag in the back of the cupboard this year as my back is telling me that cricket is out of the question right now (as is the weather). Since trapping a nerve on Jan 1st last year I have had spells where it has given me a lot of discomfort. Walking Hadrians Wall was no problem but since trying to get back to my fighting weight in January this year I have been suffering. Hopefully this years 120 mile bike ride shouldn't cause me any problems so I am now looking forwards to prepping myself for that challenge. I've been able to enjoy some more sedate sport down at my Trout lake recently - bagging a few beauties including a wee brown trout caught on a dry fly in the river.

Rosie had a lovely weekend with friend Dasiy coming to stay. The highlight was a party at Bewilderwood but I had a great afternoon with them in Cromer on Saturday

Oh and Nan's off next week

Tuesday 8 May 2012

8th May

Wahay for Luton. Hope they don't blow the play-off final this year. Get back in the league and before you know it we'll be back up to the Championship where we belong.

Wahay for Norwich sticking it to Arsene Wenger! Super Grant Holt

Thanks to the Ware family for hosting us Hull's up in Skipton for the weekend. It was a brief visit but very enjoyable none the less

Thursday 3 May 2012

3rd May

Well, what happened to April???
I think it must have rained every day.
From actually sunbathing on the beach at Cromer in March to worrying about floods in early May.
It should have been a month to start benefiting from longer evenings - but I think it's a conspiracy by the oil companies to make us keep the heating on for longer.

The month's highlights?
Well, on the football field, Norwich have had an indifferent month. Safety for next season has obviously relaxed the team and results have dipped. Luton made a strong push towards the play-offs so hopefully there will be a Wembley final and promotion back to near normality of the Football League.

On the home front, Jenny seems to be involved in exams all the while. Next year is the big year for finals before moving up to 6th form though she is revising like mad every day right now.
Rosie and DG went on a very enjoyable trip to Irlam hall in Derbyshire with GVS. They climbed big hills, went down mines and got soaked to the skin.
My fishing season has started though a rotten back injury and rottener weather has put paid to much fluff chucking. Tried to get the bike out regularly too but it's always raining
We Still have a lodger. Nan hopes to be in her new gaff before the end of May. Not sure who is going to do the washing up once she has gone, but it will be a bit quieter!
Mother is on her usual form. There seems to be very few days where she doesn't have a little cry while visiting or phoning up. Bottom line is - she isn't very happy and isn't very well, so we are all having to share in that. Unfortunately there's not a lot anyone can do to help her other than give here more time - which is proving difficult for us all. A few changes at St Nicholas staff wise may help, but Mum will need to be a lot more mobile before she breaks through her current tearful state. I'm off to see her shortly though it will be too cold and wet to go out so that won't help bring on a smile.

Bring me sunshine
Jez

Monday 9 April 2012

9th April 2012

So - Norwich win away at Spurs
Quite a remarkable event seeing as only 2 years ago they lost 3-1 to Tranmere in Div 1 at Easter.
Luton also won today (1st time for a while) under a new manager. It would be amazing if they get through the play-offs this season but I have my fingers crossed

Main events since my last updates

I arranged the volunteer day up at the church in Bessingham, where my good friends from work gave up a day to tidy things up a bit. Here's my Youtube photo thingy
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gQWzPxjp1b8&list=UUWiiUaTNlS4zMcyrd7OxZvg&index=1&feature=plcp

I spent a few days in Scarborough with DG. We decided to make use of Nan and she kindly looked after J&R while we went Up Country. Snow on the Moors, cold and wet on the coast. Good food and very relaxing despite a long drive each way.

Easter has been lovely. My dad and Sue laid on a huge spread on Friday - lovely. Great footie on Saturday (2-2 v Everton). Rosie did the Easter Egg Hunt at Barningham Hall with Nan. Mum was able to spend time with her sister on Good Friday so didn't need our time till Saturday. James, Hayley and Ellie were en-residence in Cromer and spent the day with us on Sunday. Great big Sunday lunch.

Even spent time at the beach hut this morning despite dull wet weather. Got lots done in the garden too.

Back to work for me tomorrow. Would really love a few more days off but will save those days for when the sun shines again. May have a little glass of something while watching the highlights from White Heart Lane later if I can get Rosie and Tallulah out of the sitting room (High School Musical III - aaagh).
